PLAINSONG WORKSHOP AND
CONCERT
FOLLOWED BY SUNG
COMPLINE
28 JUNE
2008
“I keep six honest serving
men,
(They taught me all I
knew);
Their names are What and Why and When,
And How and Where
and Who.”
Rudyard Kipling, from ‘Just So
Stories’, 1902.
What?
Chant
Workshop
Imaginative
fully participatory and rewarding afternoon on
Gregorian
Chant. A friendly
introduction. As a Festival
event these are for everyone and no
specialist knowledge
or skill is necessary. “The careful structuring of the day
and clarity of explanation opened up a
world I had thought
of as entirely beyond my reach.” Sarah
Scaife,
Museums and Libraries
Council. Also booked by cathedral
choirs and the RSCM to introduce singers
to this
beneficial resource. “Fascinating, enlightening and helpful
to adults and boys alike, effective
and compelling” James
Lancelot,
Concert
Song
Collecting - The Seeds of Love. Folk-song
arrangements by Vaughan Williams, and by
Butterworth,
Sharp, and
Grainger, together with diaries, letters, and
writings, evoke the wonder and excitement of
these early
twentieth-century collectors. This was an influential
moment in English music. The story depicts
their search of
the countryside for singers of
‘genuine’ folk-song, with
amusing and moving anecdotes of countrymen
and
women, of bicycles, notebooks, and
phonographs. This
most popular programme commences at the
formation of
the English Folk-Song Society in 1898
and ends with the
death of Cecil Sharp in 1924 (more
information Concert
Programme).
Sung
